This is the 3rd best selling books of Malcolm Gladwell, combining science and looking for some interesting observations and theories on the behavior and human performance.
In this book, Mr. Gladwell is trying to establish that the success of the "outliers" is much more than meets the eye. For example, most people believe that success is a function (or a combination) of two main factors: work hard and / or "natural talent".
While not to discredit one of these two theories, what makes you think, showing quite convincingly that is not so simple.
Talent plays a small role in success, but if not properly maintained and developed. "Natural Talent" only get far without discipline and concerted practice their art be it music, sports, business or politics. And it has powerful illustrations examples in all areas.
Gladwell gives the concept of "work hard", some credit, but again, with some caveats. All work done in the world if misguided or ill turns essentially a big waste of time. He uses examples from the world of medicine and accounting to illustrate his views in this regard. But what seems essential to work "hard" concept is the notion that to be an expert in anything requires a minimum 10,000 hours of "practice". This concept is not new and has been accepted for some time. So if it is to hit a golf ball becoming a world class musician, or investors who require that you spend 20 hours per week for 10 years honing his craft before entering the kingdom experience. And best practices that focus on good things or if they become the teacher to go through the motions.
But perhaps the most convincing explanation and controversial success is the significant opportunity in the success. From Bill Gates to star NHL of the richest men in the world which provides details on how the factors compelling opportunity, as when they are born and opportunities they (the right place at the right time, mostly) were so great, if not more, a factor in its success than his innate intelligence, his unit, or any other factor.
So, without disclosing further details on the book fascinating, I recommend it to anyone interested in learning the factors of success. There are few details about life in some very interesting people, like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Mozart, and I think may rethink his philosophy on what constitutes success and how it is "achievable".
