What's the best way to market a childrens book?

I work with a photographer and he has written a childrens book. I am trying to figure out the best way to market it. We are the publishers so we don't have a big publisher to do this job for us. The book is a non fiction book on Joshua Tree National Park aimed at kids 2nd to 4th grade. If you have any ideas I would greatly appericate them.
Thank you in advance!!

The reason self-published books are difficult to market in the traditional way is there is no prejudgement of quality. Traditionally published books go through several filters such as agents, editors, and an acquisitions board. Anyone can self-publish and so many are hesitant to review such works.

However, if the quality is good you can market on the local level. The smaller the town the better the reception will be. Your local newspaper may not review books, but they probably have profiles of local residents. Perhaps you should contact them and suggest a profile of the two of you as a photographer and writer that would include your book.

Book sales and fairs are good places as well. You simply must apply as a vendor and get word of mouth and sales from the people that attend.

Independent boostores are slightly more receptive to self-published books so it can't hurt to try one of those and also inquire if you can hold a meeting. You would put out the ad of the signing in your local paper and pay for the books and other necessities yourself of course.

There is no real way to market your book easily on the National level unless you can get an agent interested in it, or a publisher. The problem is your book will already have an isbn number and if they accept it they have to do a reprint. Most publishing houses won't bother with this for first time writers.
