It's a "creative non-fiction". Based on a true story, but this is written by a reporter who claimed to do thousands of pages of research and interveiwing.
A lot of people claim that the author, Capote, portrays the criminals in a more humane way, almost showing the other side of them. Controversial, but a good read.
