Paper Hislop in 1916 and is an academic work that is both fact and opinion. Tells the history of religion with regard to aspects of Christianity modern, with reflections on strike in ancient Egypt, Assyria and Babylon.
Specific areas that Hislop discusses the Trinity the cult of the Mother and Child, Christmas and Easter, the Mass, purgatory and prayers for the dead, idol worship and processions, worship of relics, the Rosary, the sign of the Cross Pope or the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church Office of priests and nuns. It also seeks to establish striking parallels between the "prostitute" of the Apocalypse, as is known in the old Bibles, or the great Babylon, which is identified as the Church Roman Catholic. Hislop was a pastor, and the work was published in the U.S. by Loizeaux Brothers, described as "a nonprofit organization dedicated to the Lord's work and the dissemination of truth.
The book is illustrated, and helps readers learn more about ancient forms of pagan worship, and how the effect appears to have affected modern Christianity. The Christianity began as a continuation or termination, depending on your point of view, the ancient Jewish religion. That religion is a religion based strictly monotheistic religion, the supreme god, the Lord, or vernacular modern Jehovah. Idolatry was strictly prohibited, and any mixture with paganism and other religions has been considered an apostate crime punishable by death in the Hebrew Scriptures, commonly called the Old Testament. Of course, ancient Jews are often mixed in both the association and worship, and much of the Hebrew Scriptures can correct this error.
The same thing applies in Christian History, most of the monotheistic religion of the Christians of the first century of the church gradually became influenced by paganism, so pagan teachings as the Trinity, the use of prayer beads, idolatry and the use of images and a system ecclesiastical power which led to a Pope, has become an important element of the religion of the Roman Catholic Church. Many of the lessons of corruption Roman Catholic Church is conducted with Protestant churches.
Some think that the book exaggerates Hislop try to find parallels between the traditions Christian and pagan, others believe that Hislop makes a good case to present evidence of the mixture of modern Christian teaching, mixed with pagan trappings. Christmas is certainly of pagan origin, as is Easter, a festival dedicated to the pagan goddess, more or less known fertility (sex goddess) Ishtar. (The Greek Scriptures or New Testament does not refer to the party / Easter tradition. Only the commemoration of the death of Christ is celebrated, but not the resurrection).
In any case, while somewhat selective limit the Church Roman Catholic as the only part of the great Babylon of the Apocalypse 17 and 18, some feel that the idea Hislop basic approach worth examined in parallel and has some validity.
It is a well written piece of what could be described as the "literature Classic "Christian, who is still being discussed in a controversial today, almost a hundred years later.
Hislop's book draws striking parallels between Christianity and paganism. Hislop was Protestant minister from 1916. Some other reference material from an unrelated source on the subject of Christianity and pagan teachings can be found on http://jehovahs-witnesses-headlines.net an unofficial website presenting research, in addition to other things, on Christian teaching. Jehovah's Witnesses are in no way connected with the book The Two Babylons or Alexander Hislop or to this book review. Jehovah's Witnesses have at times, referred to this publication.
