Just curious what the history books British teach war of independence from the United States? What is your perspective? What historical significance is placed on the loss of colonies, where? Just curious.
What a great question, just in time for the Dominion Day and Independence Day. I'm just a Yankee here. The British author Simon Schama wrote a trilogy of British Isles and also a recent book on the relationship in the region The American Revolution between the colonies and England. I was wrong on this point, but Schama take was that the British Empire before the American Revolution, is especially focused on North America, after energy has been spent in India and to a lesser extent Africa. If one imagines a British Empire of the 19th century was still the American colonies, they may have never tried to create the Raj in India, or is the exploration Africa with energy empire did. Schama sees the British as a movement along an arc to place greater emphasis on qualities such as liberal democracy, human rights, civil rights. They are sometimes marked by the influence of conservative and events the time. For Schama, apparently, the Latin Revolution was an attempt by the British to claim the legacy of these qualities liberal empire for themselves. The revolution forced the empire to try to reform their political settlement. But he was closing the door after the Americans had left - it was too late to save the colonies to the motherland. However, these reforms have increased by keeping parts of the empire fair. You can imagine if you will, an alternate history in which the British defeated the revolutionaries, and the rule has been amended and also had a large population of English speakers focused on the North Atlantic. The world would have been different. Better? Hmmn ... This is another question.
